Job Description
  • POSITION SUMMARY
    • The Trauma Performance Improvement (PI) Specialist works with trauma program leadership to coordinate all aspects of the department’s Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) Program. The PI Specialist identifies, verifies, and investigates complications and events involving trauma patients. Under minimal supervision from the Trauma Program Manager and/or Trauma Medical Director, they will analyze trends and lead the performance improvement and quality assurance activities of the trauma program beginning with pre-hospital and extending through discharge. The Trauma PI Specialist will utilize a variety of improvement methodologies and group management techniques to support teams through improvement initiatives. Working collaboratively with all members of the trauma team and leadership, they are responsible for development of action plans and completion of loop closure/event resolution for both quality of care and risk issues. Emphasis will be placed on initiatives to increase efficiencies and reduce variability, errors, and defects utilizing program data and current trauma best practices. The Trauma PI Specialist is expected to prepare reports and recommendations, provide education to team members as needed, and apply new continuous improvement methodologies to spread successful innovation throughout the hospital. This role will reflect the most recent criteria and standards outlined in the current American College of Surgeons (ACS) Resources for the Optimal Care of the Injured Patient with respect to trauma performance improvement activities. This position will report to the Trauma Program Manager and serves under the CEPS division of nursing and Director of CEPS.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
    • Licenses and Certifications Required
      • Current or temporary RN license in ND or compact RN licensure.
      • Verified as an advanced trauma course provider (ATCN, TNCC, FNATC, TCAR, or TNS). Instructor preferred.
      • Other certifications may be required as needed based upon experience and departmental needs.
    • Educational Requirements
      • Graduate of an accredited nursing program. BSN preferred.
      • Official diploma or transcript from the school/university from where Degree was received.
    • Experience Requirements
      • Minimum of 2 years clinical experience as an RN.
      • Emergency Department or Trauma/Surgical Critical Care experience preferred.
      • Excel and Microsoft Office applications proficiency.
      • Leadership experience preferred.
      • Strong verbal and written communication skills to design and present effective educational programs, as well as interact at all organizational levels.
      • Must possess strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.
      • Ability to manage simultaneous projects/assignments with potentially conflicting priorities and meet all deadlines a must
    • Special Skills or Training Requirements
      • Strong drive to improve quality and process.
      • Experience with clinical quality and patient safety principles/initiatives; demonstrated ability to apply concepts.
      • A minimum of 16 hours of external trauma-related continuing education per year.
      • Must complete the American Trauma Society- Trauma Outcomes and Performance Improvement (TOPIC) and Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR) within one (1) year of hire, and Trauma Process Improvement Course during next availability.
      • Must complete a trauma registry course that includes all the following content within six (6) months of hire:
        • Abstraction
        • Data Management
        • Reports/report analysis
        • Data Validation
        • HIPPA
      • Participate in an ICD-10 Course within one (1) year of hire and a refresher course every five (5) years.
      • Participate in and pass the most recent version of the AAAM’s Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course within one (1) year of hire.
